You are correct, you need the product key to activate. As long as you have the 25 character key you should be able t re-install on the computer after re-installing Windows 10 or If you don't have the key, you are supposed to be able to find it in your HUP order history.
If you work at a large company that has lots of Business subscriptions, or you know someone who works in a place like that, you may qualify for the HUP, Home Use Program, discount. Recurring Billing allows you to continue using the HUP even after you leave the company.
